Worship Series

This podcast is the first in the series on Worship by Jeisyn Murphy, Ph.D. given at Beit Shalom in Austin, TX on January 27, 2006. Using Genesis 22:1-19, Jeisyn describes worship from the perspective of sacrifice and obedience. Listen to Worship I

Worship Part I

Study of Genesis 22 Worksheet

Read B’reisheet (Genesis) 22:1-19

1. Why would Elohim ask Abraham to make a human sacrifice after He had used Abraham as a witness not only for a monotheistic (one God) religion but also as a testimony to HaShem’s loving-kindness who is against human sacrifices? (Gen 22:2)

2. What do you think was going through Abraham’s mind as he journeyed from Beersheba to the land of Moriah (Jerusalem)? Be specific. Put yourself in the sandals of Abraham. (Gen 22:3)

3 (Gen 22:5)
a. What could Abraham have possibly meant about worship when he said to the young men traveling with him, “Stay here with the donkey, and I and the lad will go over there; and we will worship and return to you.”

b. Why did he say that we will return to you if he was going to sacrifice Yitzhak? Consult Hebrews 11:17-19 to help you in your answer.

4. What is meant by, “‘God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.’” Remember, this was said before the sacrifice was to occur. Gen 22:8

5. The Sages calculate that Yitzhak was 37 years old and Abraham was well into his centennial years. How did Abraham bind a 37 year old man and lay him on an altar? (Gen 22:9)

Worship Part II

This week we looked at three key portions of Scripture to determine what gets in the way of our worshiping God.

Download the questions for this study here: Worship II–What Gets in the Way of Worship?

We began with John 4:3-30 and looked at Genesis 29:1-11 at the same time. In order to explore blockages to worship that appear in our attitudes, we viewed Genesis 25:29-34 where we identified “Esav Attitudes” like pleasure, desire, and a “live-for-the-moment” mentality.

I invite you to listen to this week’s discussion, work through the worksheet for Worship II, and pray that the Holy Spirit reveal to you any area of your life that you need to leave behind so that you begin to drink from mayim chaim–the Living Waters of our Messiah Yeshua.

Shalom,

Jeisyn

Worship III-What is the Point of Worship

This week we looked at the meaning of the terms “glory” and “to glorify” and discovered how glorifying God is at the heart of worship. We viewed Psalm 96 and John 17 as our texts.

Listen to the message from erev Shabbat and download this week’s questions and we pray that you are blessed as you participate with us!

Shalom,

Jeisyn

Worship IV-Suffering

This week we looked at the concept of suffering as being part of worship (but distinct from the suffering we experience through poor choices). Our key Scriptures are:

I Kings 19:9-13
Daniel 3:1-30
Psalm 139
